Customers Come From London For Taste Of Fair Lawn Bake Shop

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — It's been just over a year since Yanneris Gennao opened Yani's Bakehouse on River Road in Fair Lawn.

And she's already becoming an international sensation.

"Customers tell their family about me, and then they'll walk into the store," said Gennao, a mom of two, while preparing a sheet of guava macarons.

She recently had someone call the shop from London, confirming that she would be open after their plane arrived.

"I was their first stop in the U.S.," Gennao said. "I couldn't believe it."

Gennao has also become quite popular for her macarons, jarred tres leches, scones and chocolate chip cookies.

Last Saturday, all of her items — which she makes from scratch daily in her shop — were gone from the shelves by 11 a.m.

The cheapest item in her shop is her breastfeeding cookie, even though it costs her the most to make.

The “lactation treats” include special milk-producing ingredients like brewer’s yeast, wheat germ and flax seed.

"I feel like anytime you want something healthy it's so expensive," Gennao said. "So I make those cheap."

Gennao isn't too worried about the difference, though — it makes up for itself in other ways.
