TENAFLY, N.J. — Ray Lucas' NFL career ended with an injury that started him toward painkiller abuse. Now, recovered from his addiction, Lucas will share his cautionary tale in Tenafly.

Tenafly's Our Community Allied with Youth (OCAY) will host Lucas and other panelists for their first event of the year meant to raise awareness about drug addiction.

Lucas is a Rutgers alumni who played for the New York Jets from 1997 to 2000. He suffered an injury toward the end of his career where he was prescribed painkillers. His last year in the NFL was 2002.

The event comes at a time when opioid addiction is a nationwide epidemic.

According to Human Health & Services , New Jersey is not as severely impacted as neighboring states such as Pennslyvania or Connecticut, but addiction rates have risen nationwide over the past decade.

Tenafly received a federal grant of $125,000 a year for five years to combat drug addiction in the community.

The event takes place on March 30th at Clinton Inn, 145 Dean Drive, Tenafly. Doors open at 7 p.m., with Lucas' keynote beginning at 7:30 p.m.
