OLD TAPPAN, N.J. -- Old Tappan Library is honoring graduates of its Master of Book Appreciation Program on Dec. 15.
"My future son-in-law said he was working on his MBA: Master in Beer Appreciation at this restaurant," said Library Director Susan Meeske, who then figured she could conduct one for books at the library. "I talked to my staff about it and they were all enthused."
Patrons became students with the assignment of reading a variety of books to earn credits. Genres included fiction, mystery, young adult, classic literature, biography or memoir, non-fiction, and picture.
"Students" then had to watch a DVD based on a book. They earned two credits for each book or DVD and received awards after every 12 credits.
On graduation day, Meeske will call each participant by name and issue 10 adults and 13 youngsters their diploma. Names will also appear on a plaque to be hung at the library.
"So we are considering ourselves unique in being the first library in the U.S. to offer such an 'esteemed' degree," Meeske said.
