TETERBORO, N.J. — A recently-surrendered puppy that was rescued from Hurricane Harvey has tested positive for Parvovirus, the Bergen County Animal Shelter announced.

The Teterboro-based shelter urged anyone who rescued dogs from the hurricane to get them checked for the deadly disease.

All other dogs on the adoption floor have been vaccinated and tested negative, authorities said

"We are seeing more and more contagious disease outbreaks," the shelter said on its Facebook page.

"All pet owners need to be vigilant with current vaccines for your existing pets and health checks for new family pets."

The puppy is being aggressively treated and is expected to make a full recovery, shelter officials said.

The virus is expensive to treat but if left untreated is both very contagious and usually fatal, the shelter said.
