The Award is one of the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards, given each year to honor outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector.

The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs.

At a minimum, facilities applying for this award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas.

The Valley Hospital's Green Team, has developed standards across new construction, renovation and replacement products that include ensuring that all newly installed lighting is LED, rooms have occupancy sensors, PVC Free Acrovyn doors are being used in new projects and when doors need to be replaced, Daylight Harvesting is used when possible, and paint is low VOC.

Furthermore, there are blue recycle collection cans in every patient room in the hospital with a custom made sticker to indicate which kinds of items to include in single stream recycling.

The hospital is also dedicated to green cooking and eating practices.

It has been participating in Meatless Monday since July 2013.

It has revised the patient menu and removed all pork and beef main entrees and replaced them with vegetarian, fish or poultry entrees, which feature antibiotic and hormone-free turkey, chicken, fish and dairy.

Additionally, all dairy purchased is antibiotic and hormone-free.

“As a Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change Award winner, The Valley Hospital is committed to improving the health of our patients, staff, and community as a whole,” said Leonard Guglielmo, Assistant Vice President, Facilities, and Chief Supply Chain Officer for The Valley Hospital.

“We take pride in our sustainability efforts to lessen our impact on the environment and look forward to working with Practice Greenhealth to continue this work across the country.”
