Happy Birthday To Norwood's Bruce Harper, Former Jets Return Kicker

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Englewood and Norwood native and Closter resident Bruce Harper.

Harper, a retired Jets running back and kick returner, was born June 20, 1955 and turns age 62 on Tuesday.

Harper played high school football at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood and then played at Kutztown State College, Pa.

He was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Kutztown.

Harper is the all-time kick returner in New York Jets history with 5,407 yards in kickoff returns. He also served as the Jets punt returner from 1977 to 1982, totalling 1,748 PR yards and 1 touchdown. 

He was also a running back, with 1,829 rushing yards, 2,409 receiving yards, 1,784 PR yards and 5,407 KR yards.

Harper lives in Closter and was a longtime resident of Norwood.

He is founder and director of the non-for-profit organization Heroes & Cool Kids based in school systems throughout New Jersey.

He also is an ambassador with the New York Jets, is a board member of the Lodi Boys and Girls Club and the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation Board.
