Honoring Sully: Memorial Vigil Held For Abandoned Northvale Dog Found Dead

NORTHVALE, N.J. — No dog deserves to be left for dead — especially not Sully, those who knew him said during a memorial service Monday outside the Northvale home where his abandoned corpse was found.

He was a good dog, an old dog, sweet as can be, they said.

Yet authorities said Sully was left to die -- and took to eating sofa cushions to try and survive.

“What kills me is that this happened a mile from my house but I couldn’t do anything about it because I didn’t know about it,” said pet rescuer Janine Weinert of Norwood, who operates the Bergen County New Jersey Lost and Found Pets Facebook group.

Weinert was among a dozen or so people who gathered on the front steps of the abandoned Crest Drive home where water flowing from a burst pipe and an alarm ringing inside forced firefighters to break in -- only to discover Sully's body ( SEE: Police: Dog Left To Die In Northvale Home ). An investigation was continuing, police said.

Neighbors stopped by Monday night, as Weinert and other animal lovers lit candles in Sully’s honor.

“It’s devastating, because we all would’ve been there to do something for this dog,” Weinert said. “I can’t believe this stuff is going on in towns around us.

"It’s just a shame.”
