Supporters were called to action when Dolores Alfis, the director of the James F. McGuire Seniors Center, lost her husband in early November.

David Alfis, a longtime borough firefighter and Viet Nam Army veteran, “was her soulmate and caregiver,” said borough councilman Peter Sotiropoulos, who was among the creators of Go Fund Me site for the grieving widow. “They did everything together.”

Alfis, who has a motorized wheelchair, was undergoing dialysis when her husband died unexpectedly at home. It was the same day that doctors told her she might need a partial leg amputation.

"We want her to come back and continue what she’s doing," Sotiropoulos said. "Seniors love her. She puts her heart and soul into everything she does.”

Organizers exceeded their $10,000 fundraising goal in a week's time. Donations have continued to come in.

“She was so appreciative and thankful that the community stepped up to help out," Sotiropoulos said, noting that Alfis insisted she not be considered a charity case. "The response has been unbelievable."
