Community members shared memories of Whiteman on the Volk Leber Funeral Home website.

"She was smart, so smart her heart was so full of love and life," said LuAnn Weiss, whose daughter was friends with Whiteman in grade school.

"She was a witty, wonderful, spirited girl."

Brian Hanson-Harding said he had the privilege to have Whiteman in his high school English classes. He was the teacher.

"Tori was the kind of student who made me love teaching, who kept me happy and fulfilled in the classroom after (at the time) 25 years, who made me look forward to going to work every day," he said.

"She was full of opinions, wit, ideas. She had a lot to say in class, and even more to say in her writing. Even now that I have been retired from teaching for over two years, I still have several of her papers in my 'model papers' folders on my computer."

He shared a snippet of her writing:

I am a 'poet with a vengeance.' I can describe the scent of spring, the weightlessness of fledgling love, and the colors brought forth by moonlight.

Whiteman was a graduate of Northern Valley Old Tappan and the College of New Jersey. She was enrolled as a graduate student at Montclair State University.

She is survived by her parents, Barbara and Bob Whiteman; her sister, Alyssa Dykstra and her husband Jake; grandparents Robert Cappiello, Fran Gagliostro and Robert Whiteman, Sr.
