In just the first week, the dozen-man squad raised nearly $5,000, while increasing awareness of men's physical and mental health issues -- including prostate cancer.

“I was inspired to get involved," said Detective Sargeant Justin Fox. "A close personal friend of mine, a 34-year-old, is currently battling stage-four cancer."

Knowing many have a loved one battling the disease, Fox asked Police Chief Chris Campbell for permission to meet the challange.

Campbell embraced the idea.

“This is the first time that I know of in the department’s history that we are allowed to grow facial hair,” said Detective Alex Yanuzzi.

“We understand, too, that there are so many causes," he said, "so whatever people can give, we appreciate it.”
