Mahwah Dad Spared Jail In Drunken Driveway Crash That Injured Girl, 13

MAHWAH, NJ — A Mahwah married father of three got a plea-bargained three years probation, 50 months of community service and a seven-month driver's license suspension for being drunk when his car pinned a 13-year-old visitor against another vehicle last May and he took off.

"We had a very strong case" against William Almonte, said Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli, whose detectives attended Monday's hearing in Hackensack. "We expected him to take the plea."

The Passaic-born Almonte, who has been active in township recreational basketball programs, was originally charged with assault by auto and DWI.

The girl's father was picking her up in his car on Aspen Court when Almonte got into his 2016 Ford Mustang, put it in reverse and hit the lacrosse player in his driveway last May 29, Batelli said at the time.

Almonte then took off, the chief said.

Mahwah Ambulance Corps members and paramedics responded and treated the girl, who was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with a severely injured leg.
