A convict from Norwood who collected $200,000 in tax refunds by filing bogus W-2 forms claiming he worked for companies that didn’t exist was sentenced today to 28 months in federal prison.

Stephen Pirrone (NJDOC)

Stephen Pirrone is due for release from South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton this June after what will be 18 months of a three- year sentence on a 2010 burglary conviction out of Essex County.

In the federal case, P irrone, 51, admitted creating false W-2 forms for himself and a family member that contained fabricated names of employers and names of employers who didn’t employ them. Tax withholding amounts were fabricated, he said.

The forms were used to prepare false income tax returns for 2003 through 2008, which were filed with the IRS on behalf of Pirrone and the family member.

The relative wasn’t changed, indicating the likelihood of government cooperation.

In addition to the prison term, Judge William Walls sentenced Pirrone to three years of supervised release and ordered that he pay $199,356 in restitution.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited special agents of IRS-Criminal Investigation with investigating the case, presented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan W. Romankow of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Organized Crime/Gangs Division in Newark.
