Norwood Train Uncoupling Causes HazMat Scare

NORWOOD -- Houses in Norwood shook, and responders got a major scare when a car uncoupled on a train that was transporting 55,000 gallons of acetone -- but no damage or harm occurred.

"My house shook, and so did many others," Norwood Police Chief Jeffrey Krapels told Daily Voice. "Thank goodness it turned out to be nothing. There was no derailment, no leak."

County hazardous materials units rushed to the scene to join police and firefighters from Norwood, Old Tappan and other area towns at the end of River Vale Avenue around 7 p.m. after learning that one of the 16 CSX cars carried the paint-stripping solvent.

A Norwood ambulance also responded.The train was on the move again by 9 p.m.
