The arrest came about when police observed the suspect, identified as Tarik Zubi, committing a traffic violation on Greenbush Road in Orangeburg on Saturday, around 10:33 p.m., according to police.

A traffic stop was ordered, but officers observed Zubi throw a beer can out of the passenger’s side window prior to the vehicle coming to a stop, police said.

When speaking to Zubi, officers noticed he had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes; the officers also detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, according to police.

After failing numerous field sobriety tests at the scene, Zubi was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated and transported to Orangetown Police Headquarters, police said.

A subsequent check of his license also showed that he was operating the vehicle without a court mandated interlock device installed, according to police.

While at headquarters, Zubi consented to a breathalyzer test, which he failed, police said.

The defendant has been charged with DWI and operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device, both misdemeanors, and littering, a violation, according to police.

He was released and is due back in Orangetown Justice Court on Wednesday, Oct. 19, to answer the charges, police said.
