YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Old Tappan police are looking for the third member of a large-scale ring responsible for what they said was a shoplifting spree throughout Bergen and Rockland counties, after finding two of them with more than $8,000 worth of stolen goods from several area pharmacies.
Officer Eugene Wilkins was on patrol when the trio hit a CVS in the Bi-State Plaza on Old Tappan Road, Police Chief Thomas Shine told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Responding to a call from a CVS employee, Officer Eugene Wilkins spotted the thieves’ car on South Washington Avenue, he said.
As he tried to pull the car over, it turned down a dead end. All three then got out and ran toward a wooded area on the Harrington Park border, the chief said.
Wilkins immediately grabbed one suspect, later identified as Michelle Taylor, 43, of Hempstead, Long Island.
Officer Charles DiMaria snared a second suspect with assistance from officers out of River Vale and Harrington Park. He was identified as William Clinton Wade, 50, of Queens.
Several police agencies set up a perimeter. A Bergen County Police K-9 Unit responded. Officers even found pieces of the third suspect’s clothing.
Old Tappan Detective Sgt. Joseph Tracy is heading the search for him. Anyone with information that could help is asked to contact the department’s Detective Bureau: (201) 664-1221.
Wade and Taylor, meanwhile, were being held on $50,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, charged with second-degree shoplifting, eluding police and receiving stolen property. They’re both due in Municipal Court tomorrow.
“They’re suspects in several CVS shopliftings in Bergen and Rockland Counties,” Shine told CLIFFVIEW PILOT . “We have information that this may have occurred in Ramsey earlier that night. The dollar amount of the proceeds is high [for shoplifters].”
