WAYNE, N.J. -- A Delaware driver who berated Wayne police, accusing them of unfairly stopping him and planting drugs in his car, was arrested after they found a handful of pills, authorities said.

Officers Mike Polifrone and Mark Ciavirella were conducting safety and security patrols when they stopped the 2004 white Cadillac with Delaware license plates for equipment violations on the southbound Route 23 service road near Fairfield Road, Capt. Laurence W. Martin said.

Spotting drug paraphernalia on the center console, they questioned the driver, 24-year-old Joseph Digirolomo of Dover, DE, he said.

Digirolomo "said he was late for a court date in Little Falls, and that [New Jersey] police constantly stop him and issue him summonses," Martin said.

His passenger, a 23-year-old Wayne woman was complaint, but Digirolomo "continued yelling and acting irrationally," the captain said.

A search turned up four Oxycodone pills and a sublingual Suboxone strips, he said.

Digirolomo "continued his badgering of the uniformed police, accusing them of planting the drugs and not showing courtesy" before he and his passenger were taken into custody, Martin said.

Both were released pending court hearings.

In addition to illegal drug and paraphernalia possession charges, Digirolomo received eight summonses, the captain said.
