Would-be burglar somehow slips through dragnet

Police finally called off a manhunt last night after two and a half hours of searching for a prowler scared off by a homeowner who was near his garage.

With a State Police helicopter overhead and two Bergen County canine units on the ground, several departments searched for the man after another resident dialed 911.

As CLIFFVIEW PILOT reported exclusively last night, the prowler — described as either white or Hispanic and wearing a hooded sweatshirt — may have been responsible for at least three attempted burglaries in the River Vale/Montvale area and one break-in that apparently succeeded, police said.

Also joining River Vale police in the search were units from Montvale and Old Tappan in Bergen County, and Orangetown, N.Y.
