Youngsters will show off their long ball power in the first ever Junior Home Run Derby, sponsored by Major League Baseball, at Hogan's Field on May 7 from 3:30-5 p.m.
"It's great being able to hold such a special event here where I grew up playing baseball," host Rob DeBrino told Daily Voice.
Winners of local and regional contests will compete in the National Final prior to MLB's Home Run Derby during 2016 All-Star week in San Diego, according to MLB.com.
Hitters will be divided into two divisions: 12U (born on or after July 18, 2003) and 14U (born between July 18, 2001– July 17, 2003). Birth certificates are required to confirm ages.
Each competitor will get 10 swings. There will be multiple rounds and the top two sluggers will face off for the winner of the Easter Division, said DeBrino.
The fence for the 12U division is set at 170 feet, and 200 feet for the 14U group, added DeBrino.
DeBrino is a former standout pitcher for Northern Valley/Old Tappan. He played in the Minnesota Twins' farm system.
"I'm calling out all you big home run hitters," he said. "Get your bats, eat your Wheaties and bring your 'A' game."
