OLD TAPPAN, N.J. — The Northern Valley Old Tappan High School golf team stood in the clubhouse during a thunder delay at Hopewell Valley Golf Club in Pennington, New Jersey Monday afternoon, trying to contain their excitement.
The team, comprised of sophomores Ryan Lee, Chan Park and Sam Yam, and senior Graysen Kim, had already finished their 18-hole round, with a combined 313 strokes between them.
Their competitors -- Northern Valley Regional High School Demarest, Moorestown High School and Mainland Regional High School -- still had one hole to play, but were already mathematically eliminated from the Group 3 State Championship.
"We knew we had it, but we couldn't jump around," Old Tappan Golf Coach Tom Quinn told Daily Voice.
When the thunder delay did finally end, Old Tappan High School received its second golf Group 3 State Championship in school history.
"It is an amazing feeling to be the coach of a championship team," Quinn told Daily Voice. "But my players really deserve all the credit."
His players turned heads this season because of their young age ( SEE: Youth Reinvigorates Old Tappan Golf Program ).
Along with sophomores Lee, Chan and Yam, there is also sophomore Ryan Tavares and freshmen Martin Han.
The team went 19-1 this season and won the Big North Division Championship earlier this month.
Quinn sees no reason why next year's team can't be even better.
"All of our top players will be only juniors next year," Quinn said. "I don't think this will be the last time we are down here with this group of guys."
